West African Drumming

Enter into the intense and exciting polyrhythmic music of West Africa. Participants will learn the history, technique and tradition of West African percussion instruments such as the djembe, sangban, kenkeni, dununba and shekere. No previous experience needed. Repeat visits are encouraged to learn all the parts of a traditional West African rhythm.

Instruments provided for up to 10 participants. Or, you can bring your own. This class is for students, ages 13 and up.

Jay Beck is a percussionist, vocalist, drum-maker, and educator who has been performing, teaching, touring and recording professionally for many years, including as a member of the band Psalters, Madison Greene and Phillybloco. He was a co-founder of Holy Fool Arts, a core organizer for the Carnival de Resistance project and now lives with with his partner Tevyn East at Dreaming Stone. His newest musical project, Beast, exegetes the symbolic relevance of certain plants and animals within scripture, through percussive blues-infused original compositions.
