A Garland for May Day 2026

Come celebrate this ancient Celtic spring festival and honor the wisdom of our folk traditions that connect us to the land. This date was chosen as International Workers Day to both memorialize the Haymarket Riot and to affirm the resilient, resurgent movements for labor rights that are part of the fight for life. Also, this is the feast day for St Joseph the worker.

You can expect to learn some history and songs and participate in a planting ritual in the center of our garden to welcome the coming of spring.

Afterward, we will share a community potluck and stories around a bonfire. You are encouraged to bring a dish, but we want you there regardless of what you can or can’t bring. All are welcome to this free/donation event!

Schedule:

2:00 pm- Songs and History of this event

May Pole Ceremony

Planting Ritual and Garden Dedication

5:00 pm- Community potluck

Chill hang / song share / storytelling

What to Expect
  • There will be songs, history lessons, mead making, and ritual actions, including a Maypole dance and planting some plants.
  • This event takes place outside on uneven ground. You assume and are responsible for all potential risks (biting insects, weather, etc)
  • Bathrooms are available, featuring state-of-the-art composting systems.
  • You are welcome to bring colorful flair and paint your face when you arrive.
  • You are free to come and go. Those who stay will enjoy an open circle with space for songs and storytelling, later in the evening.
What to Bring
  • A dish, drink, or treat to share at the potluck. When you arrive, we will store food in the kitchen. A fridge or a warming oven is available, should you need them.
  • Your own water bottle, eating dishes, and cutlery (or use the compostable ones that we provide).
  • Comfortable shoes for walking on uneven surfaces and venturing in the garden (close-toed shoes are the most protective)
  • Layers for warmth (it will get chilly in the evening)
  • We have picnic tables and some chairs, but you may want to bring your own chair.
Google Maps knows where we’re at, so you can just enter “Dreaming Stone Arts and Ecology Center.” When you plug in our address, Google Maps takes you to the wrong place. For reference, we are at 382 Pleasant Hill Road, Rutherfordton, NC.
There is a sign at our entrance, and our driveway is .3 miles long. You will come all the way to the top of the hill, where the main event space is located. There are signs and volunteers available to orient you.
