The Joy of Salsa

Rutherfordton Food, Art, & Brew is excited to present this six week beginner-to-intermediate level Salsa Dance Class, hosted by Dreaming Stone Arts and Ecology Center and led by Charlie O’Connor. Funding for this class comes from a Meta Community Action Grant and a NC Arts Council Grassroots Grant. This class is open to students age 16 and up and is being offered at no cost for the first 20 people to sign up!

About The Class:

This six week series will dive into the fundamentals of Salsa and get you moving with your partner with a deeper understanding of each other, yourselves, and the dance! Come explore the dynamics of push and pull that emerge from the playful dialogue between leading and following. Learn to generate presence and clarity of movement while discovering the freedom of relinquishing to the rhythm of the clave. We will touch in on the principles of movement and how you can dance for, with, and against your partner in order to create more dynamic dance experiences.

Over the course of the six weeks you will learn six different patterns that will help you feel more confident on the dance floor while developing your expressive potential.

This course will help you find a sense of ease in your dancing and the pleasure of feeling alive in your body. Come animate your soul with this beginner to intermediate level class, and experience The Joy of Salsa!

What to expect:

15 min: Warm up/Open dancing
45 min: Lesson, practice and switching partners
30 min: Open dancing (Put those new dance steps to work!)

A partner is encouraged but not necessary for the course. We will, however, rotate dance partners so be prepared to dance with everyone!

Drop ins are welcome depending upon availability.

Charlie O'Conner

Charlie’s dynamic and playful movement background informs his overall approach to teaching and performance. As a beginner specialist, he is equipped to coach anyone suffering from the nefarious and pervasive TLFS; Two Left Feet Syndrome! While he is trained in twelve styles of ballroom and latin dancing, Charlie also had the pleasure of receiving his education in the physical theatre pedagogy of Jacques Lecoq under the tutelage of Joseph Ivo Von Vespri. Charlie has recently moved back stateside after partnering with Jennifer and Garincha Hilaire at St Croix Ballroom and Latin Dance Studio, and later Dazzled STX. While living on St. Croix, Charlie served as choreographer for several productions at the Caribbean Community Theatre, such as Chicago and Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks. With over ten years of teaching experience, Charlie’s gentle approach to instruction aims to create a fun and supportive environment where anyone can feel safe to experience the joy and connection that partner dancing offers!
