Community Safety in the Wake of the Storm
Collecting our experiences and lessons learned from Hurricane Helene.
Tuesday, December 3rd: 3 pm to 6 pm
As we get our bearings in the wake of the disruption and devastation of hurricane Helene, we see how much is revealed in these times. We are reminded of how interconnected we all are, how we need each other, and how isolation endangers us. We have learned about narratives and how stories travel. We have learned about help that is helpful and help that is not helpful.
Disasters show us how well organized we are to take care of each other. There are moving examples across Western NC where existing grassroots organizations had the capacity to coordinate immediate support for neighbors in need. Mutual Aid is Community Safety. The more we build structures for cooperation, the easier it is to assess need, communicate effectively, and co-ordinate our response efforts.
Let us come together to harvest the lessons that we’ve learned, and consider the things that need to be initiated or birthed for us to weather future storms together.
Together, may we grow solutions for taking care of each other in stressful times
This program is free and will require thoughtful and respectful participation of all participants. We will provide coffee, tea and snacks and invite free will donations to cover the program costs.
